Veneers
18 September 2023

Thinking about changing the way your teeth look? Veneers are one option, and it helps to know what's involved before you decide. At DNTL Code, your Dental and Dermal Clinic in Broome, we're here to talk it through with you.
What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite resin, made to fit over the front of your teeth. They may be considered for a range of dental concerns, including:
- Chipped or broken teeth
- Stubborn stains
- Misaligned teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Irregular tooth size or shape
Veneers aren't right for everyone, and they aren't the only way to change how teeth look.
Behind the Scenes: How Veneers Are Placed
So, what's involved? It all begins with a consultation with one of our friendly dentists. We'll chat about what you'd like to change and assess your teeth, gums and bite to see whether veneers may suit you. We'll also talk through the risks, your suitability and the alternatives. If veneers may suit you, we can make a mock-up so you can see the proposed shape and length before any tooth is prepared.
If you decide to go ahead, placement usually takes two to three appointments. First, a small amount of enamel is removed to make space for the veneers; this can't be undone (see the risks below). Then, the veneers are made in a specialised dental laboratory. Finally, at a later appointment, we bond the veneers to your teeth.
What Veneers Can Offer
For the right person, veneers may offer:
- A change to the colour, shape or size of the teeth they cover.
- A durable restoration that, with good care, can last for a number of years.
- Stain resistance, particularly with porcelain (ceramic) veneers.
Results vary from person to person, and depend on your teeth, gums and bite.
Navigating Potential Veneer Risks
Like any dental treatment, veneers have risks to consider:
- Removing enamel can't be undone, so a tooth prepared for a veneer will usually need a veneer or another restoration from then on.
- Veneers can chip or break if not cared for properly, particularly with grinding, nail-biting or biting on hard objects.
- Margins may discolour over time; we'll show you how to look after your veneers.
- Veneers may need to be repaired or replaced in the future.
- Teeth can be sensitive for a while after they're prepared.
We'll talk through the risks that apply to you at your consultation.
The Cost of Veneers
The cost of dental veneers varies with the number and type of veneers you choose. After your consultation, we'll give you a written treatment plan outlining your options and expected costs before you decide anything.
Are Dental Veneers Right for You?
Every person is different, and there are a few different ways to change your smile, such as clear aligners, teeth whitening or leaving things as they are. To find out what may suit you, book in for a consultation with one of our friendly dentists. We'll assess your needs, goals and preferences, explain your options and their risks, and put together a treatment plan for you to consider.
