Who is Dr Gavin Brown?
BDS, MSc, FFDRCSI, M.Ortho.RCSEd
After graduating from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1992, Dr Gavin began his career in general practice and hospital-based oral and maxillofacial surgery. He then spent 18 months as a flying dentist, delivering care to remote communities in northern Canada. That experience shaped his calm, adaptable and solutions-focused approach.
Back in the UK, he worked in surgical and hospital settings, including Oral and Maxillofacial and ENT departments, before taking on a senior role with the South Tees Community Dental Service, where he cared for patients with dental anxiety, medical complexities and special needs.
He was awarded his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, completed a Master’s degree in Orthodontics at Newcastle University and then Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, formally qualifying as a Specialist Orthodontist.
Since then, Dr Gavin has practised in the UK, New Zealand and most recently Bermuda, where he spent several years in private orthodontic practice. He has taught both undergraduate and postgraduate students and has a keen interest in mentoring early-career clinicians. He is a member of the British Orthodontic Society and the British Association of Oral Surgeons.
When he’s not in clinic, he’s usually outdoors with his wife Susan.
What does an orthodontist do?
An orthodontist is a dental specialist who focuses on diagnosing, preventing and correcting misaligned teeth and jaws. After completing general dental training, orthodontists undergo several additional years of university study to specialise in how teeth and facial structures grow and move.
That covers treatments like braces, clear aligners such as Invisalign®, and early orthodontic assessment for children. If you’re weighing up the first two, our guide to braces vs Invisalign® in Broome and the Kimberley explains how each works.
Orthodontics in Broome, without the flights
Orthodontic treatment isn’t a single appointment. It’s a consultation, treatment planning and then regular reviews for as long as treatment runs. For families in the north of Western Australia, the question has often been where all of those appointments happen.
At DNTL Code, your routine orthodontic care can be managed here in Broome. That means less organising flights, accommodation, time away from school or work, and travel for routine appointments.
- Orthodontic care based right here in Broome
- More choice of appointment days
- Care from consultation through to treatment, locally
Consultations, treatment planning and ongoing orthodontic appointments can happen here, across different days of the week, rather than your care being structured around an occasional visiting clinic. Local care. No flights required.
Children, teens and adults
Children. Not every child needs orthodontic treatment. Some children benefit from early treatment, others just need keeping an eye on. We’ll tell you which. An orthodontic assessment doesn’t automatically mean orthodontic treatment: if treatment isn’t needed yet, Dr Gavin may simply monitor your child as their adult teeth continue to come through.
Teens. Braces or Invisalign®? You don’t need to figure it out before you arrive. That’s what the consultation is for.
Adults. Your teeth don’t have an orthodontic expiry date. Adults may choose orthodontic treatment to straighten teeth, improve their bite or address concerns they’ve had for years. The first step is simply finding out what’s possible.
There are more answers about early intervention, palatal expanders and thumb sucking in our orthodontic FAQs.
The Kimberley and Kununurra
All DNTL Code practitioners are based in Broome and deliver care across the Kimberley, with the aim of improving access to professional, evidence-based services closer to home.
We have also announced planned visits to Kununurra for in-person orthodontic consultations for braces and Invisalign®, designed to support patients who would otherwise need to travel long distances for care. Appointments are limited, and ongoing visits depend on community demand. Read about the Kununurra visits, or call 08 9192 1624 to register your interest or ask about upcoming clinic dates.
